#10 Katy Perry – Katy is a major label guilty pleasure for me. 3 solid singles and tasty remixes backed with stealing the show at the MTV lame Video awards and providing one of the few pleasant moments on this year’s Warped tour. Call the doctor indeed.
#9 Benji Hughes – One of the greatest radio show guests we’ve had; Benji taught us how to time travel! New West Records finally released Benji’s debut LP A Love Extreme this year and there were so many great haunting and hilarious songs it turned into a 2 CD set. Benji Hughes is a genus.
#8 Lykke Li – I was mesmerized the moment I heard her and then had the pleasure to introduce Lykke when she headlined our Hunnypot does SXSW Event. Needless to say she owns any room she plays and her band bring it as well.
#7 Sons and Daughters – I feel like I’m late finding these Glasgow darlings. Awesome single releases and “This Gift” gives and gives! Their also friends with The Victorian English Gentlemens Club!
#6 Bloody Beetroots – The Beetroots killed it with huge shows all over the world while consistently delivering tremendous originals and remixes all year. They triumphed at the Hard Fest and the annual BPM Magazine party; a mighty force in the 2008 Dance Scene.
#5 Hollywood Holt – The New York Times called Holt indefatigable and in ’08 that was certainly true. This rapper from Chicago was everywhere this year; whatever scene or city you’re in there’s a good chance Holt rocked a party and taught everyone how to Juke. Swerve and Lean Hollywood!
#4 MIA – Kala is MIA’s second studio album released in August 2007; it’s a damn fine record that still satisfies. She was one of the highlights of Coachella this year for me and with that Pineapple Express trailer use America has started to pick up on her pulling MIA out of a self imposed retirement. Bonus points are given for her current association with Million $ Mano, Mic Terror and Slumdog Millionaire!
M.I.A Come Around feat. Mic Terror
#3 Santo Gold – Santo’s performance at Coachella was my favorite. It was Santo, a DJ and 2 incredible female Public Enemy inspired dancers that lifted the field that day. Killer singles and a damn fine debut album even with terrible artwork the songs, production and performances are solid throughout.
#2 Tittsworth – The infamous Baltimore DJ Jessie Tittsworth kills the dance floor worldwide with the illest club jams mixed with a great sense of humor; his Plant Music debut LP 12 Steps Is sample free and every song stands on its own with cutting edge guest vocals by Kid Sister, Paserock, Nina Sky, DJ Assault and Pitbull. Simply flawless and the best party album of the year!
#1 These United States – This Washington DC ragged-edged folk, rock and Americana outfit actually released 2 warm, rich, thought provoking albums this year and I hear a third is coming soon. In March the label United Interests released A Picture of the Three of Us at the Gate to the Garden of Eden to rave reviews. The band toured extensively and in October TSU followed up with the brilliant sophomore LP Crimes. Jesse Elliott, the band's lead singer and songwriter, serves as These United States' main creative foundation. The songs are intelligent, catchy and reaffirming. Simply the perfect band for our times. <a href="http://s280.photobucket.com/albums/kk194/hunnydrip/TOP%202008%20ALBUMS/?action=view¤t=51zTcyeH7HL_SL500
