The Brighton-based trio Fujiya and Miyagi is a bundle of contradictions. Their name suggests a duo, but the group's never toured with less than three guys; their music owes a sizable debt to the motorik drums and openness of Krautrock bands like Neu!, and yet the duo's breakthrough second album was released by British disco stalwarts at Tirk Records; their lyrics are often cryptic, but they are paired with music that suggests they make the plainest sense.
Now three albums deep into their career, the contradictions are sure to keep cropping up. But there's also an unmistakable directness to the band's music, and that directness is echoed here, in the way that lead singer/intoner David Best discusses fellow cult faves MF Doom, Captain Beefheart, and Will Oldham.
1. What music was played in your home while you were growing up? My mum liked The Carpenters and Johnny Mathis so that was always floating around. My dad liked Gene Vincent, but he wasn't allowed to listen to it in the house so he kept a few cassettes in the car.
2. Who is the best artist we have probably never heard of? There's a song from the '80s by La Perversita called "La Soupeuse," which is around ten minutes long and if you are able to speak French it’s apparently really filthy. I like a new group called Django Django very much also.
3. What is your favorite song lyric? Probably the end of "Rhymes Like Dimes" by MF Doom. The bit where he's going "Mashed potato, apple sauce, buttery biscuits". It just sounds like he's making it up on the spot, which he probably was.
4. What song do you want played at your funeral? I'd like quite a long song so people feel they have to wait around ‘til it's ended and talk about me more and hopefully cry more too. Maybe "I Feel Love" by Donna Summer or "Church of Anthrax" by John Cale & Terry Riley.
5. What is your favorite b-side? "Nervous breakdown" by Ronnie Forte, which is the b-side to "That Was Whiskey Talkin".
6. Which medium do you prefer: vinyl, cd, or download? Vinyl, because it sounds better and looks better, although MP3s are pretty handy.
7. Which artist would your fans be surprised to find out you like? I like '90s r&b like Aaliyah and TLC. I'm not sure if that's surprising or not.
8. What musician would you choose to cover one of your songs? I'd like to hear Will Oldham cover our song "Lightbulbs". It would be nice to hear it sung properly.
9. Who is the most overrated artist? Everyone who isn't underrated is overrated. Marking albums out of ten has made music into a competition when it shouldn't be. I also don't want to slag anyone off because I'm trying to be a better man.
10. What musician or band do you wish you’d seen play live in their prime? Either Captain Beefheart or Serge Gainsbourg. I'd like to have seen Beefheart around the time of Clear Spot. I don't think Serge was playing live during the time he made Histoire de Melody Nelson, Vu de l'Exterior or l'Homme a Tete de Chou but if he did, and I could, I would have seen him then. They were both the best.
11. What non-musical influences do you have? I like cats a lot. They influence me in everyday life.
