Hunnypot Does...
Powered by CircleSquareLA

As he always does, Mr. Hot Tub Johnnie himself got our 253rd Hunnypot Radio Show off the ground and running. A few highlights from his set were: "Wonderfully" by the wonderful James Douglas Show; the classic "Ungawa" by Chow Nasty; and "#1 Crew" by Treated Crew. Right after Hot Tub's set, we stopped to chat with Seven Saturdays for a minute. They showcased a piece of their live-set-to-come with Eleven Eleven off of their self-titled debut EP and talked a little bit about what they've been up to.

From there, Ms. Laura Katz (Music Supervisor; Cutting Edge Group) impressed us with her set list comprised almost 100% of bands with names that start with B. My favorites (again, my opinion) were: the exclusive debut of "At Your Door"by Big Harp; "Hurracan" by The Blind Shake; and "Family Tree" by the Black Lips. She kept the energy high with an old school feel, and we appreciate her for that. Among many other things, of course.

Mr. Daryl Berg (VP of Music; Shine America) brought us our next set which was a little slower paced, yet it didn't sacrifice any intrigue. A few that peaked my interest were: "Debonair" by The Afghan Whigs; "Hello" by Martin Solveig (feat. Dragonette); and "Reach Out" by Nas (feat. Mary J. Blige). Be sure to check those tracks out, and follow @DarylBerg on twitter as he is one of "Billboards's Twitter 140." Thanks for a killer set Señor Berg.

Starting off our live segment, we were dazzled by Toy Bombs, a group from Salt Lake City with a very versatile sound. What started out as a pop-rock band at the beginning of the set, swiftly morphed into an almost rockabilly, Elvis-influenced rock-and-roll band. From the sparkly silver guitar to the rotating front-men, these guys were certainly stimulating.

The entrancing Seven Saturdays was on next, and they switched up the mood with their loud distorted guitars and manipulated feedback, yet in a shoe-gazer rock sort of way. Definitely a powerful, emotionally intense performance. They too had rotating vocalists, only this time one male and one female. Both were extremely talented, which was to be expected in such a stellar group of musicians.

Lastly, and certainly not least, we were entertained by our good friend E-Train, aka Mr. Erich Malo. Constantly lighting the mic on fire with his quick lyrics, he never disappoints. One of my favorite tracks is/was "Wreck the Discotech" which will be on his upcoming sophomore album, Imagination of Mr. Malo set to release on the 1st of the year, 2013.

A hug thank you goes out to the Hunnypot crew that makes all the magic happen every week. Much love to the Central SAPC for hosting us at their fine establishment once again. And last but not least, a big thank you to all the performers and guest DJs for bringing us some amazing content for yet another killer Hunnypot Radio Show.  12/03/2012

This past Tuesday night, our great friends at Blue Microphones opened the doors to their state of the art studio at the House of Rock mansion in Santa Monica. The studio which was designed by multi-GRAMMY winning mixer/producer Jack Joseph Puig and Blue Mics', Tyler Barth was the perfect place for our Hunnypot Pop-Up Radio Show.

Hot Tub Johhnie kicked the intimate party session off with an all "Hunnypot Artists" DJ set playing all the standout tracks off the brand new Hunnypot Vol. 10 Sampler including Far East Movement, Yuna, RICH, Teenage Bottlerocket, The Dollyrots, The Wow, Steve Poltz and many other great gems you should know.

Helping kick the party into full gear were LA alt-rockers and Hunnypot favorites the ROBOTANISTS. The band which is lead by lead singer/songwriter, Sarah Ellquist performed a stellar live session for the intimate crowd, playing standouts and fan favorites like "Wait a Minute Here" and "The Ghost You're Haunting". Sarah and the boys also premiered 3 new tracks which will be featured on the bands' forthcoming LP set for release in early 2013. Be sure to head over to the Hunnypot website to listen/download their entire performance!! The House of Rock/Blue Mic studio crew did an incredible job...as they engineered an absolute peerless sound session!!

DJ Boom Shack also got into the action, as he closed out the night with some intense jams by HP artists' Eighty4 Fly, Peachcake, Skull Tape, Wool and newly breaking artists Trinidad Jame$, Lorine Chia w/ Chance The Rapper and many more.  11/27/2012

Robotanists

ROBOTANISTS

"Female-fronted indie at its finest, a soulful voice cast over booming guitar and the downright pretty production quality typical of the genre. The Robotanists are here to fill that void [of bands like Denali] in every respect, and "On/Off The Ledge" is as sincere as it is dancy, adjectives that normally take effort to pair together. Catch the LA quartet's full length, Plans in Progress, out February 15 on Overhead."
~ RCRDLBL.com (USA)

“Evocatively dreamlike without sacrificing command or precision. [Plans in Progress] moves consistently through a spectrum of hushed melodies, crashing choruses and driving rhythms. The Robotanists’ third full length album may be the shortest, but it’s the most relentless and auspicious in what lies ahead for the four piece.”

After an incredible anniversary show, the Hunnypot crew brought the heat with yet another amazing show to kick off our new year. With guest DJ sets by Tyler Barth of Blue Microphones, and Trygge Toven Music Supervisor and Producer at Vidsyn, the Central SAPC in Santa Monica was the place to be!

Hot Tub Johnnie got us started like he always does with a solid new track from Macklemore and Ryan Lewis "Thrift Shop (Feat. Wanz)." An impressive set of current artists like Gosteffects and Teenage Bottlerocket followed. My favorite track would have to have been the collaboration between Iggy Pop and Best Coast's Bethany Constantino, "Let's Boot and Rally."

Tyler Barth was our first guest DJ, and brought some fantastic picks like Blacklight Dinner Party, The Mowgli's and LA based Alt-J to name a few. We loved having him on to talk about what's going on over at our favorite Blue Microphones.

Mr. Trygge Toven brought out a killer set of new and upcoming tracks that had the venue groovin as well. A few highlights were PHOX's "Sister", Chet Faker's "I'm Into You" and Todd Terje's "Swing Star Part 2".

Our live show was insane with an extremely high energy performance from Peachcake. From the feather boa accents on stage, to the goggles and white shag vest adorning the frontman, we couldn't turn away from the stage. We are so glad they were able to join us all the way from Arizona, great set.

Last, but CERTAINLY not least, we were entertained by the entrancing harmonies of The Young Romans. This guy-girl duo knows exactly what they're doing. Complimenting each other on keys and guitar, the vocal collaboration between these two was incredible. If you missed them, make sure to check out their latest video that scored a spot on our HP Video Pick segment of the website.

We hope you were out there on the front lines with us, but if you weren't, make sure to be there next week for our 253rd Hunnypot Radio Show at the Central SAPC! Much love to the Hunnypot crew for putting in the blood, sweat and tears it takes to make it all happen.  11/19/2012

What started 7 years and now 250 show's ago is still going stronger than ever as Hot Tub Johnnie and the Hunnypot crew had one hell of a party last Monday night!

Before we got to the blazing DJ sets and performances by our special guests Thomas Golubic, Selena Arizanovic, Steve Poltz and The Moth and the FlameHot Tub Johnnie kicked the show off in classic Hot Tub fashion with upbeat bangers from REFLEX, Mayer Hawthorne/RAC Remix, Dragonette, Far East Movement, Kreayshawn and the new RiFF RaFF single/HP video pick "Jenny Craig".

Our first guest DJ of the night was music supervisor Selena Arizanovic, Nu Image/Millenium Films' go to lady for all things music. Selena prepared an exceptional set featuring some of her favorites, including a couple taken from her latest projects The Iceman and Playing For Keeps. Tracks from Terraplane Sun, Dion, L.J. Waiters and The Electrics, The Go-Getters, Galactic and much more all shined like gems as Selena stormed through her very 1st Hunnypot DJ Set! Be sure to keep eye's out for her new projects The Iceman (Richard Kuklinski), Lovelace (Linda Lovelace), Playing For Keeps and The Killing Season all due out late 2012 - early 2013.

Joining in the celebration was none other than Hunnypot favorite Thomas Golubic, the main musical genius behind AMC's drama classics Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead. Johnnie got Tommy G in the Hot Tub for a sweet interview session...where they looked back on the first 250 shows and even got Thomas to sneak out a few teaser tips for the upcoming episode of The Walking Dead. With that said Thomas also came ready with slammin' DJ set with nuggets from Mt. Wolf, KiD CuDi/King Chip, Azealia Banks, Kill Paris, ultraísta/Four Tet Remix and many more to hear!

We also had some smokin' live performances including a wildly pleasing headlining set from renowned singer-songwriter Steve Poltz. Steve brought fire to the stage on his Noineen Noiny Noin standouts "Check Your Head" and "Spirit Hands" and taking over the night with his freestyle tribute jam to Hunnypot's 250th show -- fantastic! Poltz also included a stellar rendition of his Jewel penned smash "Who Will Save Your Soul" where he gave insight to the entire back story on the song and his crazy trip with Jewel in Mexico. Be sure to pick up/download Steve Poltz' latest album Noineen Noiny Noin.

Utah based alternative rockers, The Moth and the Flame closed out the night with an emphatic performance, which included powerful showings of their standout gems "Lullaby II" and "How We Woke Up" taken off their self-titled debut album.  11/05/2012

STEVE POLTZ

Southern California’s Steve Poltz is one of the most beloved songwriters of his generation. His music--as both a solo artist and with cult legends The Rugburns--has enjoyed long stretches in the Billboard top ten, gobbled up acres of mainstream radio and appeared in scores of television shows, commercials and movies. His latest release Noineen Noiny Noin is without reservation, the most absurdly-named, pulchritudinous, footstomping party of 2012. Poltz’ 13th full-length album is a wind-in-the-face joyride that takes on a jaw-dropping range of themes, including love, murder, Johnny Cash and transvestites. From top-to-bottom, Noineen Noiny Noin rocks, beguiles and entertains, opening like a flower with each new song. A wild, freakish-looking flower, but a flower, nonetheless.

Our Hunnypot Radio show hit it with a bang at The Central: SAPC in Santa Monica last week. We had some killer DJ sets, live acts and we kept the party going until the morning hours. Serious thank you’s to everyone who made it out, and to everyone who was a part of making it happen.

Setting the mood for us, Hot Tub Johnnie had some hot new tracks lined up that included Boy Girl Party, The James Douglas Show, The Hives, Muse, Broke For Free, The Tapeaters and many others. All very current artists that are more than worth checking out.

Our first guest DJ in the Hot Tub was Phil Gallo (Senior Correspondent, Billboard Magazine) who brought us back with some classic artists like The Monkees, The Rolling Stones, Dead Boys, Graham Parker and The Rumour, and some new artists like ZZ Ward, Lindi Ortega, The Record Company, and more. A commendable set Mr. Gallo, we tip our hats to you.

Our last guest DJ was Jonathan McHugh (J-3 Music) who brought an eclectic mix of tunes out for us. We heard from bands like Bajofondo Tango Club, Rodriguez, Citizen Cope, Sheryl Crow, Mind the Gap and more. All around great set and interview from McHugh, lots of rad stories from the frontlines of the music industry.

Lastly, but certainly not least, DJ Boom Shack closed out the DJ portion of the show with some hot new tunes from Eighty4fly, Icona Pop and more. As always, a perfect finish to our DJ portion of the show, Boom Shack.

Starting off our live portion of the show, all the way from Seattle, was a new Hunnypot favorite Eighty4Fly. He had the dance floor moving and grooving to his seriously catchy style of flow. His energy was off the chain, as he showcased new tracks off of his latest album COLORS. Our favorite single was definitely “Cool Kids” and we can’t wait to hear what this guy does next. All around stellar performance.

Up next we had the group, Qualmes, out of Pasadena, entertain us with their hip/hop swagger. Getting the crowd together, they brought an intimate feel to the room by encouraging us to get close and get down on the dance floor. Their style is unique, setting a very jazzy, mellow mood with the music and then hyping us up with their intense lyrical flow. Needless to say, we’re glad these guys are local cause we’ll be following them closely. You should too.

Unfortunately, Flume was unable to make it for his live performance, but we still got to hear a digital set of new tunes from him. Even though he wasn't physically with us, the set still had us hittin it hard on the dance floor to Flume's electronic energy. We look forward to the next time we get to see him in the flesh, cause we know he’ll bring the party.

Once again major thank you’s to everyone who came out to listen to some great tunes and see some amazing live acts, you are the reason we work hard to put this show on!  10/22/2012

Our Hunnypot Radio show got off without a hitch at The Central: SAPC in Santa Monica last week. We had an eclectic collection of music showcased from our DJs and live acts alike! Serious thank you’s to everyone who made it out, and to everyone who was a part of making it happen, it was quite a night.

Getting us started, Hot Tub Johnnie lined up some stellar tracks that included music from Smoke & Jackal, Santigold, Kyle Rapps & Diwon, Nina Dioz, E-Train, Chloe Riley and many others. All of these are impressive and very current artists that are more than worth checking out.

Our first guest DJ in the Hot Tub was Jen Malone (Music Coordinator, Metalman Media & Supervisor at Black & White) who brought us a killer set dominated mostly by female indie artists like Icona Pop, Tegan & Sara, Niki and The Dove, MNDR and more. She respects the rock, and we respect her. Kudos on a well put-together set.

Our last guest DJ was Kii Arens (Creator, La-La Land) who brought an incredible set of tunes out for us. He started his set off with a new favorite, Tame Impala, followed by other new and stunning artists, such as, Metronomy, Beware of Darkness, Crush the Night, Melody’s Echo Chamber and Red Cross. Lastly, but certainly not least, DJ Boom Shack closed out the DJ portion of the show with some hot new tunes from Retro $ushi and Jay 305, all killer beats from the streets.  10/08/2012

KII ARENS

KII ARENS

Kii Monroe Arens was born in St. Paul, Minnesota to parents Robert and LaVae Arens. He has two brothers and one sister. From an early age, Arens had an affinity for morning cartoons, notably Sid and Marty Krofft. The show, coupled with his interest in fonts, colors, spacing and layout, set in motion a growing fascination with art and design. His early passion for music was also strong, augmented by growing up in a musically inclined family. By the mid to late 1980s, Arens was DJ’ing around the Twin Cities, and had a brief stint in Rap music, under the alias ‘2 Percent’, opening for Gang Starr, EPMD, DJ Quik, amongst others.

Arens’ early immersion in the Twin Cities music scene exposed him to many elements of what would become important features of his graphic art, including: album art work, package layout, photography, poster design, creative direction, music video direction, merchandise design/creation and music production. Although Arens created artwork continuously growing up, his career as an artist was substantively set in motion with a design gig for the Woodstock ’94 festival. Originally brought on as a hotel coordinator, he was invited to attend meetings about the festival’s design direction, and raised concerns with what he saw as an overly nostalgic festival look (one that recalled too closely the Woodstock ’69 festival).

After returning to the Twin Cities, he started working for Niceman Merchandising. Arens’ album design/layout career continues to this day, and has featured many projects, including: Dolly Parton’s Backwoods Barbie and latest, Blue Smoke,Eagles of Death Metal’s Heart On, Ziggy Marley’s Wild and Free , Glen Campbell’s Ghost on the Canvas, Pete Yorn’s Back and Forth, and, most recently, LA musician/producer Jonathan Wilson’s Fanfare.

In 1994, Arens joined his brother, Brynn Arens (Obsession/Fun House/Oddfathers), in the rock band Flipp, active from 1994–2003. He assumed guitar and backup vocal duties. The band had a penchant for cartoonish stage presentations and costuming, and embraced the Glam-rock genre reminiscent of the early 1970s, even amidst its decline as a result of bands such as Nirvana and Kurt Cobain. Their Hollywood Records debut, Flipp (1997), saw them opening for bands such as Oasis, The Ramones and Cheap Trick. They released two follow-up albums, Blow it out your Ass (2000) and Volume (2002). Although Flipp has never officially disbanded, they have not performed live since 2003.

A visit to Los Angeles in 2003 prompted Arens’ move to his current location on Santa Monica Boulevard in Hollywood, California. As his work in album art and band merchandising continued, he began creating unique, non-music associated art pieces. His pieces soon appeared in many galleries around Los Angeles, notably: M Modern, Subliminal Projects, Gallery 1988, and his own gallery, La-La Land Gallery, which opened in 2004.

Arens has exhibited in many shows, notably: Happy War… It’s the bomb, the first official show at La-La Land, which featured the work of Arens and many local pop-artists, including: Shepard Fairey, Chris Reccardi, Gary Baseman, Niagara, and many others. Art in the Dark, another show, was an exhibition of Arens’ own pieces, images created using black light reactive paints and lighting rigs, which concealed hidden content that could be revealed upon the flip of a switch. In 2005, he traveled back to the Twin Cities, to exhibit a gallery show at Ox-Op gallery. The show was based around Spin-o-Paint/Paint-by-numbers/Oil paint. Later that year, lalalandgallery.com was created, an online venue for a series of customized lightboxes created by Arens. The lightboxes were also exhibited at La-La Land, and featured in a story by the Los Angeles Times. His “Hot Lunch Artshow” followed in Oct. 2005, and featured classic tin lunch boxes customized with local Pop art. By 2008, Arens found himself as curator of an art show based on the concerts at the Hollywood Bowl. It included pieces for artists such as Liza Minnelli, Grace Jones, and Femi Kuti. His first major concert poster was completed that year as well, for a Beck/Spoon/MGMT show at the Hollywood Bowl.

This has spurred a career in concert print creation that continues to present, with over 250 pieces created for artists such as Radiohead, Queens of the Stone Age, Dolly Parton, Stevie Wonder, The Weeknd, Sonic Youth, The Who, Queens of the Stone Age, Devo, Diana Ross, Divine Fits, The Pixies, Tony Bennett,Glen Campbell, Bruno Mars, Tame Impala, The Beach Boys and many others. He also created posters for various All Tomorrow’s Parties events, as well as Goldenvoice’s Coachella. In 2010, Arens created a print for Radiohead’s Haiti benefit concert in Los Aangeles. Two editions of 250 prints were sold, and helped add to a grand total of $572,754 raised by the band during the event.

Arens’ co-direction of the music video, What We Do, for the band Devo (2011), began to broaden his creative endeavors. The video centers the viewer in a full 360-degree scene, allowing them to choose to participate in many different interactive visual aspects.

In November 2011, his second co-directed video, Ghost on the Canvas, was done for country musician Glen Campbell. It features Paul Westerberg of the Replacements, who also penned the track. Arens’ admiration for Campbell lead him to co-direct two more videos for the artist. A Better Place (2012), featuring Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age,and Hey Little One (2013), a tribute to Glen’s wife, Kimberly “Kim” Woollen, who helped Campbell in his battle with Alzheimer’s. Most recently, Arens co-directed the video for Vampyre of Time and Memory, a track from Queens of the Stone Age’s sixth album, …Like Clockwork (2013). The video featured three separate rooms that the viewer can navigate, creating a unique viewing experience.
