Master Session with Pete Rock Mt. Olympus

FACILITATOR: Walter Jones - ASCAP
During his recording, producing and remixing career, Pete Rock has established himself as one of the most distinguished producers in rap, collaborating with the likes of Nas, Common, Mary J. Blige, Ghostface Killah, Busta Rhymes, Public Enemy and Run-DMC. Showing that he remains sharp as ever, the Mount Vernon, New York rapper-producer just released a solo record, aptly titled NY's Finest. Pete established himself as a DJ on Marley Marl's late 1980's radio show. Pete pioneered a way of filtering out sounds from original recordings that he could use to build beats, a tool that distinguished his recordings with former partner in rhyme C.L. Smooth -- 1991's All Souled Out EP, 1992's Mecca and the Soul Brother and 1994's The Main Ingredient. Pete also emerged in the 1990's as the premier remixer in the urban music industry, handling reworkings for Mary J. Blige and House of Pain. But it was his horn-driven work on Public Enemy's "Shut Em Down" that made him a remix phenomenon. Since then, Pete Rock has released a string of solo albums, including 1998's Soul Survivor and 2004's Soul Survivor II, and produced songs for Keyshia Cole, Ghostface, Talib Kweli and others. As a real music pioneer, Rock will share his unique art of production and his expertise on how to stay on the cutting edge.

9:15 - 10:30am Master Session with Ricky Skaggs Hollywood Ballroom

MODERATOR: Jim Steinblatt - ASCAP
Sometimes in life, things come full circle. That's the story of Ricky Skaggs. A pre-teen Bluegrass multi-instrumental prodigy who performed with masters Flatt & Scruggs, Bill Monroe and Ralph Stanley, Skaggs was also a key member of the Country Gentlemen and J.D. Crowe & the New South. In the 1970's, Skaggs was an on-call studio ace for the likes of Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, and Emmylou Harris. And in the 80's, he broke through as a pioneering New Traditionalist, burning up the mainstream Country charts, racking up 15 Top Ten hits during that decade. A 13-time Grammy winner, Skaggs has, in recent years, made his way back to Bluegrass, releasing a series of acclaimed albums on his own Skaggs Family Label, while broadening Bluegrass boundaries via intriguing collaborations with Bruce Hornsby and The Raconteurs. This session will find Ricky sharing unique insight into the art and business of traditional music and how and where it intersects with the mainstream music industry.
