The 293rd edition of the Hunnypot Radio Show was true to it's storied history. Featuring indie-dream pop of Seven Saturdays, hip-hop from DoZay, the untameable stylings of Hobosexual, and alt-pop new wave of Cold Blood Club, it was one of the most eclectic nights of music in recent memory - and that was just the live performances!

HOT TUB JOHNNIE and the HP Radio crew put another slammin' show in the books. Nestled in The Mint's confines, Hot Tub Johnnie kicked off the show with and spread the HP love with tunes from Nashville's BEARHEART, LA's , A HOUSE FOR LIONS, HP fav's LUXXURY, LOUIS PRIMA JR., KRAAK & SMAAK, MANKIND, SEINABO SEY, DIE ANTWOOD, and more.

MOLLY BOHAS  of North Star Media joined Johnnie in the Hot Tub for a special interview and curated dj set. Molly tipped us to some of her favorite acts at the moment - including new music from HOBOSEXUAL, The Lower 48, GOLD, Aceyalone/Cee-Lo and much more. Be sure to listen back to catch the great interview and DJ set from Molly.  06/16/2014

SEVEN SATURDAYS

Jonathan D. Haskell’s work as Seven Saturdays is informed by the desolation of afterhours Los Angeles. From dimly lit Mulholland Drive to the isolated streets of Downtown, it is in these quiet moments symphonic landscapes emerge; coming together to form the headphone-centric Seven Saturdays. Seven Saturdays began as a creative concept in 2010 when Los Angeles musician/producer Jonathan D. Haskell wanted to sharpen his engineering skills on off days during the recording of his first two EPs (Seven Saturdays – which Stereogum described as “gripping and mellowly epic” – & The Snowflakes That Hit Us Became Our Stars). Over seven consecutive Saturdays, Haskell challenged himself to write, play and record an entire song each day. Not only did this exercise lead to the band’s namesake and a full-length album (2011’s Love In The Time Of Anticipated Defeat), it also grew into something Haskell had not anticipated. “It was really cathartic because not only did a fully realized ambient record emerge from this experience, but that vision ultimately expanded the boundaries of what I initially thought my musical direction would be,” Jonathan explains, “whereas the first EPs were more structured and orchestrated, these ‘ambient’ recordings were free and sonically expansive.”

DOZAYSOCIALMEDIA

DOZAY

Born in new York and move to Los Angeles at the age of 3 years, his mom settled in the city of west Covina, which has both its negative and positive influence, but with the help of his step father on his side, Dozay shaped into a respectful, dedicated and hard-working young man. Dozay states,”From the beginning I knew I wanted to entertain people because I thought it was super dope.: Although some consider his music to be more entertaining than regular hip hop/ rap, Dozay still tries to maintain the elements of hip hop in his own work. He always makes sure that he does not stray away from anything else that’s coming out musically and at the same time trying to give his music a bit of a make-up or face lift while trying to keep it real and delivering fresh while having fun at the same time. Dozay loves to entertain. He will always help sell tickets on behalf club promoters to club goers and in return the promoters will let him perform in the clubs for free. Behind Dozay, is the man they call “The African Jew”.(GSE) The African Jew has been in the music industry for over twelve years.

HOBOSEXUAL

“It’s a sound with scurvy, a creaming of fuzzed amplification that builds and fans out. Way out. Think Thin Lizzie (sic) and Black Sabbath burning on a pyre of Lincoln Logs. It’s a bloodletting of wattage with looping, chunked stacks of heaving guitars. If you’re afraid of the rock, don’t listen.” – Trent Moorman (The Stranger)

Since guitarist/vocalist Ben Harwood began the band in Seattle, Washington near the end of 2009, Hobosexual has been making the most of their local notoriety and having a hell of a great time. They sold out of the thousand-copy run of their self-titled debut CD (Hobosexual, 2010) before they’d toured more than an hour away from home and then recorded a live album at Seattle’s historic Columbia City Theater (Hobosexual: Live At The CCT, 2011), selling all two hundred cassette-only copies in a little over a month, all while they set the standard for other local rock duos with an uncompromising live sound that often sounds a hell of a lot more like a tastefully overdriven heavy metal quartet successfully attempting to drown out an exploding Boeing 747 engine. Now that Hobosexual has become a regular act at local music festivals (including the inaugural Timber Outdoor Music Festival in 2013 and Slack Fest – the raucous summer birthday celebration of KEXP-FM’s music director Don Yates – in 2012 and 2013), appeared on several local radio and TV broadcasts (notably KJR-FM’s Bob Rivers Morning Show, KEXP’s Audioasis with Hannah Levin, and Art Zone with Nancy Guppy), and sold out of their first self-produced line of pre-packaged 3-3/4” action figures, the band is releasing their second studio record, Hobosexual II. It’s fair to say that risks have been taken in making this album louder and heavier than the swampy lo-fidelity blues of their first release.

COLD BLOOD CLUB

Cold Blood Club is a dark, indie rock love letter to New York City that puts a new spin on the electro dance/pop sound with an edgy blend of soul and rock influences.  Inspired by life in New York and the likes of New Order, Depeche Mode, Broken Social Scene and The Flaming Lips, guitarist/songwriter Tom Stuart (Radio America) began writing songs for powerhouse singer Kendra Jones. What started as a small studio project quickly evolved into a collective of dynamic live musicians.  After recruiting former bandmates Jesse Reno (Radio America) to play bass and Brad Peterson (Earlymay) to join on lead vocals, Cold Blood Club was soon joined by wunderkind drummer Shin Kamei (Angela Jane), flame haired violinist Hilary Davis (Bella Koshka) and Adina Benno on keys.

This week Hunnypot would like to send a salute to Sizzy Rocket for her progressive pop rendition of the "Girls" track off of the Beastie Boys debut album Licensed to Ill. Sizzy did what few could do when she successfully reworked the Beastie Boys classic into a fresh new-age anthem for girls and boys alike. The music video is done in a fashion reminiscent of an experimental 90's neon kaleidoscope and through some satirically sexy shots, subtly conveys a statement on gender equality that would have both MCA and Rosie the Riveter singing praises to Sizzy Rocket. Check her out at:

One of Hunnypot’s own; Dama/Libra just released a new video for their song Been To The Water. The video consists of a collection of vintage film snippets compiled by Chris Purdie (a good friend of the band). It features scenes from post natural disasters and traveling trains and subways that derail into a body of water. Once the song hits its peak, we see people happily frolicking at the beach or in lakes. The scenes encompass the feel of the song and really give a visual to such meaningful lyrics.

NYC’s very own Cold Blood Club has a new music video and we are more than proud to exclusively premier the goods. “Michelada” is as pumped up as indie rock gets without sacrificing any nonchalant swagger. Combining influences from seemingly unrelated genres CBC has manifested into a sound all their own. The next time you take a ride on your fixed speed cycle and find yourself craving something new you can’t do much better.

A staple of the Brooklyn club scene, Cold Blood Club is making their way out the west (see: “best”) coast to rock face and keep pace with their ever-growing fan base. And guess what? Surprise motha-lovah! CBC is playing the next Hunnypot Radio Show alongside Hobosexual, DoZay, Nico & Christine, and Hunnypot’s own Seven Saturdays – tune in and don’t miss out!

The mid-west hip-hop scene has bred yet another avant-garde vernacular visionary, this time in the form of a dreadlocked poet that hails by the name of deM atlaS. deM, who was recently signed by Rhymesayers Entertainment (the brainchild of Atmosphere’s Slug and Ant) shapes his craft through a deeply impassioned flow that speaks volumes to his creative musical genius and esoteric roots. deM manages to paint a synesthetic portrait with his soulful melodies and invigorating flow that is both nostalgic and current, poignant and heartwarming, happy and sad. deM’s debut EP Charle Brwne, a beautifully ambivalent tribute to the Peanuts cartoon character, is a testament to his multi-faceted abilities as a seriously talented emcee. Most recently, the music video for the single “All We Got” shows deM brandishing a baseball bat immersing you in the catharsis of an existential crisis, while belting out one of the best head-nodding hooks with a positive message you’ll hear this year. deM atlas conveys through his music “the duality of man and god, ignorance and brilliance, enlightenment and obscurity”, and is inspired by “vinyl scratches, static on the radio, Nirvana and hip-hop” according to his Rhymesayers bio. This is definitely one self-aware cat that you want to look out for on the billboards.

Hot Tub Johnnie and the HP Radio crew put another slammin' show in the books. Nestled in The Mint's confines, Hot Tub Johnnie kicked off the show with and spread the love with tunes from The Watts 103rd St. Rhythm Band, Chet Faker, July Talk, Prince Sole, Head of the Herd and more. You can listen back to Hot Tub's complete set here.

Oscar Mazzola (aka DJ Loam) of Music Sales sat down with Hot Tub Johnnie for a special interview/dj set. Mr. Mazzola provided a smokin' playlist which included tracks from William Devaughn, Tina Marie, Cider Sky, Phantogram and much more.

Kicking off the live portion of the show was Hunnypot favorite and LA/Chile based artist, Yael Meyer. The always soothing sounds of Yael's music were on full display last Monday, as Yael performed a beautiful set with her full band and jumped into early favs like "Tea For Two" and "Shed Their Fear". However, the highlight was definitely the title track off Yael's forthcoming album, "Warrior Heart" which is due to drop this Summer. Our next guests were The Hollow Brave, an LA based indie-folk, rock quartet who made one of their first-ever live performances and did not dissapoint. Bringing a large crowd and packing the Mint to almost full capacity - a truly succesfull night indeed. Be sure to follow The Hollow Brave at https://facebook.com/thehollowbrave as they continue their quest to takeover the LA music scene. As we moved on the night got a a kick in the ass with the fired up energetic sounds of Mars and The Massacre. This LA based garage rock, trio and recently dubbed "LA's Best Live Band" by LA Weekly turned up the amps and brought complete sonic-bliss to our ears with a bad ass set loaded with heavy guitars, loops, drum samples and of course infectious hooks. Closing out the night was buzz worthy LA hip hop artist, Marlee East. Marlee, hit the stage and dropped some smooth rhyming flows for all to jam to. Be sure to stay up-to-date with all of Marlee's latest tracks as he prepares to release a full-length album soon.

Huge thanks to everyone that came out to support, perform, and both the The Mint and Hunnypot crews. We couldn’t make it all happen without each and every one of you! If you missed the show or just want more, you can listen back to all the performances and DJ sets at the Hunnypot website.  06/02/2014

THE HOLLOW BRAVE

The Hollow Brave is an Indie Folk band from Los Angeles, California. The band was founded in 2013 after a chance meeting of vocalists Nathan Sela and Natan Winkler, both Singer songwriters in their own right. After collaborating together on a song written by Sela, and guitarist Tal Engelstein, Elliot Samson was brought in to track drums. After discovering they had great musical chemistry, Sela and Winkler, along with Engelstein and Samson, decided to pursue a more solidified project, forming The Hollow Brave.

Mars and the Massacre is comprised of John Newell, Peter Doherty, and Ethan Walden, and these guys are a trio of energetic, fired up badassery. Louis Prima Jr. and the Witnesses

Louis_Prima_Jr-by_Denise_Truscello

Louis Prima Jr. & The Witnesses return with Blow, a new-swing stomping set, for sophomore music release.

The new title follows the band’s debut, Return of the Wildest!, released in 2012. The collection features 11 tracks, opening with title track “Blow,” the album’s namesake, which quickly sets a boisterous mood. The stirring and anthemic “Go Let’s Go,” also the release’s lead single, follows the introduction to continue the vibe. The third track, “New Orleans,” goes even a step further to showcase the group’s bona fide flair for popular blues rock. The overall up-tempo release takes some breather moments with such tracks as “Someday,” which features the guest vocals of singer Leslie Spencer, and closing number “Those Million Things.” Two truly unexpected gems are found three quarters of the way into the release. The first is “That’s My Home,” featuring vocals of Prima Jr.’s own famed and legendary singing father Louis Prima, and the cover of the ’80s Adam Ant pop hit “Goody Two Shoes.”

Prima Jr. & The Witnesses’ Blow is one release with enough sonic goodies to stir any listening into dancing feet. The is due out, on Warrior Records, June 10, 2014.

The Great Escape

page-photo-133049

What is your greatest Escape? Where would you go if you could? Would it be far away? Or very close to your heart?

The Great Escape is an LA-Based rock band comprised of veteran songwriters Amie Miriello, Malte Hagemeister, and Kristian Nord. Originally paired by the powers that be to write for other artists, these wandering minstrel souls found a remarkable chemistry with each other. The very first song they wrote was featured on a JC Penny commercial that debuted during the broadcast of The Academy Awards. Soon after, the band began recording their debut EP.

Despite their inner-industry beginnings, The Great Escape is a champion of the independent spirit. They come from all over the world, with influences that defy any specific era. They are raw, real, and unafraid to let their roots be seen. They are vibe incarnate – just close your eyes, listen, and follow your heart.

Head Of The Herd

HOTH_Edit3

Head of the Herd is modern blues with a hell of an edge.

The Vancouver based band has recently completed their sophomore record and they’ve unmistakably found their stride. Harnessing the energy of their live show, this record highlights the beastly, melodic, storytelling prowess that is Head of the Herd. They created the album in two sessions. The first with one of rock’s most sought after producers Gggarth Richardson, the man behind Rage Against the Machine’s chart topping debut, Biffy Clyro’s 2013 UK #1 album “Opposites” and countless in between. The second session was produced by Rick Jackett & James Black from the multi-platinum group Finger Eleven. The album will be named after the first single, a duet with Jasmin Parkin from Mother Mother titled “By This Time Tomorrow.” The song has been used by the NHL & Hockey Night in Canada for a playoff montage, and as of late June hit #1 on the national rock charts.

In the time since the release of their debut LP “On The House,” Head of the Herd has gained significant momentum. Being named Fox Seeds winners (previous winners include Nickelback, Matthew Good Bif Naked & More) was only the beginning. They’ve toured across the Country for Canadian Music Week, released music videos for their radio singles, played Telusfest, the Grey Cup Festival, and have opened for Guns n' Roses, Alice in Chains, The Sheepdogs, Monster Truck and the Trews. Their single “Knock Me Down” has taken them on and beyond the radio, being featured in Rip Curl and well as GT Bikes/Red Bull videos online.

Their debut single “Ain’t My Day” has been played on radio throughout Western Canada and online, with a video by acclaimed director Luke Hansen-MacDonald. And recently, Billabong has used their chilling tale of “Erinyes” for their Damn AM TV show.

Head of the Herd is modern blues with a hell of an edge, and they’re proud to unveil their sophomore LP, “By This Time Tomorrow.”

Jessta James

jessta

Jessta James may not be from the South, but the Montana native surely knows what country is. “Out here it’s about the cowboy way, ranching and rodeos,” country’s innovative new up and comer says.

A late bloomer artistically, Jessta didn’t write his first song until he was 24 years old, but the bug quickly bit him and he was hooked. “I wrote probably 150 songs over a year and a half,” the former construction worker says. “If I had an idea while I was at work, I’d write it on a two by four or a piece of cardboard I’d ripped from a box of nails.”

Even though Jessta is country through and through, it wasn’t until he discovered artists such as Eric Church, Big & Rich and Brantley Gilbert, among others, that he realized his unique blend of country rock infused with hip hop, wild west and classic rock could find mainstream success. After all, today’s iPod generation of country fans are just as comfortable listening to Jason Aldean as Ludacris and Lynyrd Skynyrd. “They’ve paved the way for my music,” says Jessta.

Front and center in Jessta’s life is his Christianity, which is evident on his album. There are many references to his spirituality—both overt and subtle. “I always want my music to make an impact and share a message,” Jessta says. “I’ve always just done what God has put in my heart as far as writing songs. What I’ve found is that it’s reaching people no matter what their faith is. It’s not coming across to people as preachy, it’s coming across as real.”

DJ Godfather

djg

Nominated #15 in the top 100 DJs by DJ Times Magazine and Pioneer Pro DJ for 2011- DJ Godfather plays it all from open format/mashup parties to the deepest ghetto tech parties incorporating his battle style turntablism in his sets. He has played across the globe numerous times in cities all over Europe, Asia, Australia, United States, Canada, China, Japan and South America and receives worldwide recognition. DJ Godfather had one of the hottest party albums of 2010 entitled VIP Status on Secretremix Records. This open format style album has it all from electro house to party tracks to ghetto tech! 15 of some of the hottest party tracks you’ll hear this year featuring artists like Pittsburgh Slim, Good Money, Brilliance, Dan Diamond, Silent Riot, Jenna Milan and Lil Mz 313, and with remixes from some of the hottest remixers like Discofries, DJ Serafin, DJ Deville, DJ X-Change, Discotech any many more !

DJ Godfather is considered one of the founding fathers of the genre we now know as Ghetto Tech. He started DJing at the age of 15 with the help of, now business partner, DJ Dick. Within a few months of getting his turntables, Godfather was already playing in nightclubs and after hour parties all over Detroit. He started producing at the age of 17 for his first Miami Bass style group Bass Association. With the buzz of a few singles off the Bass Association album on 3 Detroit radio stations, Godfather made his first solo record at the age of 18 on the now Twilight 76 Records entitled “Work Dat”. Taking his turntablism skills and mixing Detroit Techno music with Miami Bass music, and new sound was born, Ghetto Tech. With the formation of their new record label Twilight 76 with partners DJ Dick and Brian Gillespie, he took his talent and turned it into an entire business creating 3 other labels known as Databass Records, D.E.T. Only (An exclusive label with only 1000 copies of each release), and Juke Trax (A label dedicated to the Chicago style of Ghetto House and Juke music). iPunx

ipunx2Since 2005, iPunx has been one of Europe’s great mashup pioneers. After touring massively in and around Germany, he’s landed with a mashed-up crash here in Venice, CA.

In the initial 3 smash EP’s and seamless mashup album “Destroying Dancefloor”, IPunx showcased an eclectic mix of house, rock, hiphop, punk and electro, ending up in many DJ charts around the world, including BBC Pete Tong’s Buzz charts (#3). Initially a duo, and in spite of years of successful touring, the two members of iPunx parted ways in the late 2000′s to pursue individual careers.

After relocating to LA, a now solo iPunx resurrected the project in 2013. A music producer and composer during the day, it was time to play with the unorthodox mix/mashes he truly loves. “Anybody can DJ hits. I wanna play obscure stuff that is entertaining as well. I love the surprise element”. The excitement is infectious! In West LA, iPunx fan base is growing fast.

iPunx sound ranges from chill sunrise sets with little known acoustic covers to party sets with funky mashups and remixes that combine electro, hip-hop, dub step, rock, pop, soul, folk, funk and party breaks. His credo: “Never originals. Always fun.” What’s the crowd’s reaction? ” Usually, WTF is that?” And then their hips are shaking and they’re singing along with giant smiles plastered on their faces.

iPunx has played crazy fun parties in 2013 in Joshua Tree, Baja, CA and with Boogaloo and Dirty Beetles at Burning Man. You can groove live to his mixalicious mashups weekly at The Bank of Venice on the Windward Circle. Check out www.iPunx.com for upcoming performances and new releases.

Stephan Pine of ABC Music sat down with Hot Tub Johnnie for a special interview/dj set. Mr. Pine provided a ballsy playlist which included tracks from YG, Bryce Vine, Holy Ghost, Guns N’ Roses and much more. Be sure to check out his band Cocaine Ferrari coming to a party near you.

Kicking off the live portion of the show was the ever-enchanting Eliza Rickman. Performing a stripped down set with a variety of quirky-cool instruments, Ms. Rickman quieted the room with her manic dream pixie percolations. Adding beautiful pop melodies accompanied by emotional hooks, it was a wonderland of classic sounds in an intimate format. Our next guests were the Echo Park party animals Rainbow Jackson. They were loud, brash, and completely dominant of their domain. They served as a reminder that we can go balls out to a good ole fashioned rock band with the same panache as we get snuggly with singer/songwriters. As we took to the show to the next level we were treated to the Bostonian badassery of Hallelujah The Hills. They brought the full on band experience with a vibe to match. Although we only got a taste of these East Coast stalwarts and we can’t wait to get more on their next visit. Closing out the night was the incomparable DUCKWRTH – a soon to be LA hip hop mainstay with U.F.O. style and the rhymes to match. Fresh from the bay, this champion of the Cali alt-hip hop scene took us to the moon and back in time. The Hot Tub was no doubt bubbling out of control.

Huge thanks to everyone that came out to support, perform, and both the The Mint and Hunnypot crews. We couldn’t make it all happen without each and every one of you!  5-19-14

Eliza Rickman

Eliza Rickman

There is always a hint of menace and reservoirs of force haunting the corners of Eliza Rickman’s voice, whatever register it occupies. Her presence on stage—whether she wears flowers in her hair, or stuffed birds; whether she plays a Schoenhut toy piano or a grand piano—is an enveloping, soft darkness, impossible to ignore. It is quite a surprise that Rickman didn’t even realize she could sing until after she earned a degree in orchestration from Azusa Pacific University, because her voice is the most enthralling and salient feature of any on the tracks from her new album ‘O, You Sinners’. And this is saying something, considering her deftness as a pianist and her subtlety as a composer. Like Kate Bush’s work, or like PJ Harvey’s album ‘White Chalk’, the arrangements on ‘O, You Sinners’ are edged with dissonance. Like Andrew Bird, she favors pizzicato strings over junkyard percussion and complex lyrical melodies. Indeed, Rickman’s co-producer Mark Greenberg is a frequent contributor to Bird’s albums (as well as to Wilco’s ‘The Whole Love’ and to the Grammy Award-winning Mavis Staples’s album ‘You Are Not Alone’).

Rainbow Jackson

If you’ve alighted anywhere near Echo Park in the past couple of years, you probably know Rainbow Jackson, the housemates/beer swillers/rock antagonists who take power-pop and turn it into a bar fight. By way of reintroduction, they are singer-guitarist Chad Carlisle, guitarist Sam Dagger, bassist Laith Khalaf and drummer Andy Ford, and after better than a year of teasing with singles and videos, they have a new EP coming onFeb. 18. “Perpetual Summer” showcases the band’s muscular licks (Dagger is particularly worthy of his name) and finds the quartet steering clear of the consciously lo-fi production quality of most L.A. retro-rockers. In its penchant for sonic pyrotechnics, Rainbow Jackson recalls the grit of ’70s pioneers T. Rex and Badfinger, which isn’t a bad path to take if you want to have a smile on your face when the bartenders yell “last call.”

 DUCKWRTH

Los Angeles-born, San Francisco-based rapper DUCKWRTH showed how to find inspiration in the past without becoming trapped in nostalgia. New mixtape TAXFREE Vol. 1 delivers an expansion on the promise of that initial spark, broadening the production palette slightly (songs like “VOLTRON” and “AUTHENTICS” put warmly modern touches on sounds that feel inspired by a bygone era) to form the bedrock for his rhymes, a combination of subtle humor and poignant reflection on life as an outsider delivered with an able flow.

There is always a hint of menace and reservoirs of force haunting the corners of Eliza Rickman’s voice, whatever register it occupies. Her video for Start With Goodbye, Stop With Hello mimics the sound of her voice. It is inspired by the painting Proscaenia by Dino Valls. Eliza hangs out with small taxidermied critters inside a very elaborate dollhouse. There's no denying Eliza's avant-garde creativity. Her presence on stage—whether she wears flowers in her hair, or stuffed birds; whether she plays a Schoenhut toy piano or a grand piano—is an enveloping, soft darkness, impossible to ignore. Eliza Rickman will be joining us live this Monday 05/19 on Hunnypot Radio. Don't miss it!
