Michete's new song "I Cannot Survive" feat. Raven Hollywood and DoNormaal" will make you want to lay back and just chill. Michete's honest lyrics about her feelings towards being high, are real, authentic, and a reflection of troubles people face in society today. Michete tackles issues of depression, suicidal thoughts, and drug abuse. Raven Hollywood, and DoNormaal bring hypnotizing vibes to the track. Both of their unique melodies really take the listeners for a ride down the emotional moods that these artists are feeling.

When Michete calls herself an underground pop star, one doesn’t just need to take her at her word. The emcee, singer, and producer doesn’t have an official full-length album out yet, though she does have plenty of recordings (she dropped her Cool Tricks 3 EP last year), and has already played multiple sold-out shows supporting acts like cupcakKe and Shamir. Originally from Spokane, Michete’s made a name for herself as the performer to see at events aimed at large audiences.

Hunnypot can't survive without the artistic genius of Michete!

It took me a hot minute to get my bearings once "Diamond Nights" began. I knew that beat but where had I heard it before? After a bit of research I discovered it was a variation of a bass line similar to The Gorillaz hit "Stylo." And then I heard a voice that was also somehow familiar. Almost immediately I got a sense of Kim Wilde or even Patty Donahue of The Waitresses once Rocket began to playfully sing.

As Rocket's singing continued I started to see some striking comparisons with Debbie Harry's performance of the Blondie hit "Rapture." Again a little more research and I discovered those comparisons were rightly justified given that Lauren herself cites Blondie as an influence.

The official music video for "Diamond Nights" is very surreal with images from Las Vegas that I couldn't help but compare to the hypnotic Francis Ford Coppola/Tom Waits collaboration, "One From The Heart." Similarly my initial impressions of the song's lyrics were that they take you on a trip; definitely a call to adventure.

At two minutes and fifty-three seconds this is both a club and radio friendly song that could be easily extended into more of a spoken word track similar to The Nails hit, "88 Lines About 44 Women." Needless to say "Diamond Nights" has an early 80s new wave vibe. Save the date as Lauren Rocket will be performing for the 4/29 Hunnypot party!

Hunnypot Live declared a national emergency on entertainment and diverted FUN to our President's Day show. Hot Tub marshaled the music troops for his opening set. Sue Crawshaw dropped in to tell us about how she broke through The Walls and ceilings of the music industry and brought her desert island music set to share. Little Coyote ferried bitter sweet musical sentiments across our emotional borders. The duo, FBGM, colluded in harmonies and memories. Patrick Martin gave us asylum from musical mediocrity. Sheila Nicholls delivered the musical promise of better days and Monique Renee helped make Teena Marie songs great again. . .   02/18/2019

FBGM

FBGM

Rising Boston-based duo FBGM (Matt Jatkola, D. Orxata) is quickly becoming known for their genderless/genreless music and emotionally engaging performances. Their songwriting prominently features bittersweet lyrics, smooth harmonies, and versatile production influenced by dream pop, indie rock, R&B, and acoustic folk. They’ve elicited comparisons to Cocteau Twins, Low, Mazzy Star, My Bloody Valentine, and The Beatles, with some even describing their sensibilities as Lynchian.

Matt and D. started FBGM in 2016 to collaborate on songwriting, production, and performance. Having already developed a shorthand while working together in the synthpop band The Bynars, they began writing, recording, and touring immediately, releasing their debut double A-side 7" single “Dog Collar/Fan” on vinyl in May 2017. Several digital singles followed in 2018, including “Lullaby,” “Apple Trees,” and “Victim.” They partner regularly with visual artists and filmmakers and contribute music for nonprofit causes focusing on issues such as immigrant rights.

Matt Jatkola is an accomplished songwriter, musician, producer, vocalist, and artist who came up in the eclectic central Massachusetts punk/hardcore/DIY scene, fronting the indie rock/post-hardcore band The Danny Tanners (2000-2003), the experimental rock band Lights (2003-2007), and the synthpop band The Bynars (2008-2013), while simultaneously releasing music as a solo musician. He has shared the stage with acclaimed acts such as fun., Lucius, and The Front Bottoms. Matt has produced remixes for Tegan & Sara, Bleachers, Katie Ellen, and Soft Pyramids, and he composed the score for the independent horror film Bloody Henry (2018). His music is featured in the Netflix reboot of 90210 and in a number of television and web commercials. Matt produces music out of the duo’s studio, Peace & Love Laboratories, in Arlington, Massachusetts.

D. Orxata is a non-binary Latinx singer/songwriter hailing from the border towns of El Paso, Texas, and Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. Self-taught, they learned guitar via albums by The Cranberries, Cafe Tacvba, La Ley, and Failure. In 2003 they relocated to Boston and shifted to electronic and chiptune music before joining The Bynars in 2011 as a vocalist. In 2015 D. played in the experimental Sonic Youth-inspired Babe Riot and the shoegaze duo Patio Rat and was a founding guitarist for the transcore/powerviolence band WIMP. D. is a guest columnist for Performer Magazine, with their article “5 Things Every Synth Novice Should Know” featured as the cover piece for the magazine’s special synthesizer issue in 2016. D. is currently collaborating with Pura Belpré Award-winning illustrator Raúl the Third and acclaimed visual artist Elaine Bay on a children’s music project.

FBGM will set out on their first West Coast tour in February 2019.

SHEILA NICHOLLS

SHEILA NICHOLLS

Sheila Nicholls’ first brush with fame was when she streaked into public consciousness in an act of radical self exposure. Live at a Lords cricket match between England and Australia at the Ashes in 1989 she did naked cartwheels propelling herself onto the front pages of the tabloids in Britain and much of the commonwealth.

It was her first feminist action.

She was 19 and a few months later she went to stay with a friend in LA and didn’t go home. No one had even heard of A levels. Fantastic.

She has released three critically acclaimed albums: Brief Strop (1999), Wake (2002), and Songs From the Bardo (2009). In each album, smattered between songs of desire and yearning, are rousing feminist fantasies, testimonies to the failure of war, commentaries on the ridiculousness of worldwide chest-beating, anthems to the freedom gained if we just rewrote our collective mythology, and the personal eternal journey to rewrite one’s own.

Lyrically unique, she is propelled by a singular voice that is alternately confronting and magnetic The guardian has said ‘she sounds like a  cross between Liz Phair and Kate Bush’ while the LA weekly remarked ‘she has a battery acid wit, a fierce rebellious streak and is just plain seductive.’

Hollywood records distributed her first, and it made it to the US college Top Ten Billboard chart in 2000. The track ‘Fallen for you’ is featured in the film and on the soundtrack of High Fidelity.

Her second record ‘Wake’ was a studio album where she collaborated with a team including Glen Ballard, Jez Colin, Mike Elezondo, and Ozomatli. She toured extensively, opening for KD Lang, and playing her song ‘Faith,’ which hit the Billboard top 40, on the Tonight show with Jay Leno.

Her third, ‘Songs from the Bardo’ was a medley a few years in the making, after having a daughter– it was back to the home studio scene, self- written, played, engineered and produced, mostly.

Having moved thru the corporate music world and kept her integrity intact, Sheila has a new record:

“All of Nature- a collection of social commentary to music”

in which she connects what’s completely personal to what’s not limited in time at all, with the underlying premise that consciousness is itself a bigger crucible than matter.

In this self produced project, including co-writes with Michael Bernard Beckwith and Dave Stringer, she defies genre, as the record also dips into the literary arena, with each lyric being accompanied by an additional commentary and forum on her website.

She petitions us to quarry, contemplate, and take action to blow through the masks and the conditions behind the conditions. To expose ourselves to ourselves and solve all the world’s problems right now. Because actually it would be quite simple to do so.

For this task she conjured up a Superband calling upon the skills of Kaveh Rastegar— standup bass (with John Legend), Jebin Bruni— keys (with Meshell Ndegeocello), Chris Bruce on guitar (also Meshell Ndegeocello.), Danny Frankel on drums (with Fiona Apple), Gary Novak on drums (with Alanis Morrisette), Walt Fowler on trumpet (with James Taylor) and Mitch Forman on piano (with Wayne Shorter). Engineered by Pete Min, who has also recorded and mixed Meshell’s last two records.

I'll never forget Wynonna Ryder's character in the film Reality Bites referring to 7-11's Big Gulp as the defining invention of her generation, proceeding to explain its numerous health benefits. And now there is Michete, using the Big Gulp as a sexual metaphor. Michete is a DIY artist to the extreme with a special knack for crafting clever and catchy song titles. These are ear worms for sure and I will be the first to admit that I have become an eager fan to see what Michete is going to be releasing next. Here we have it with Yum Yum Big Slurp.

I can honestly say that with each new music video Michete produces you can see creative growth. Subject matter wise this song is definitely about sexual empowerment; completely unapologetic. Its interesting that the style of the music video is like a clip show then we cut into a beautiful stark black and white reserved look where Michete matter-of-factly states what she will do and enjoy sexually whether you like it or not. Putting this section outside of the grittier realism of the rest of the video was a powerful creative choice as it really does direct the attention of creator to audience. The video ends simply with Michete saying, "Everybody knows that sluts are the coolest." Check out the video and see what that means.

DEAD POET SOCIETY2019

DEAD POET SOCIETY

Dead Poet Society is a four piece band out of Boston, Massachusetts playing fretless instruments that create an uncanny wobble effect, and atypical distortion that sounds more like a vintage synth on steroids than an actual guitar. Their sound is both genre defying and defining. The band features singer Jack Underkofler, guitarist Jack Collins, bassist Nick Taylor, and drummer Will Goodroad.

The group attracted early fan attention with the release of their debut single Sound and Silence in 2014, and saw them gain a growing fanbase with the release of their AXIOM and DEMPSEY EPs that followed.

In 2016 their music was discovered by the influential Mexican blog PepeProblemas. Their review caught the attention of another up and coming rock band Sputnik, who invited DPS to open for them on their national tour of Mexico. The opportunity has lead to more tours south of the border and a rapidly growing fan base that will see the band return to Mexico in 2019.

September 2018 saw the release of single and video “American Blood,” the first time the band has worked with an outside producer and mixer, Englishman Alex Newport. The collaboration was so successful that Alex was asked to produce a further five songs that will be part of the band’s debut album set for release in the Spring of 2019. The album will also include two songs produced by Boonn (Grandson) and three more self-produced songs.

2019 will be the most exciting year yet in the band’s career, starting in February with a 22 date national tour as special guest of Andres, followed by the album release and tours of Mexico, Europe and the Midwest.

MADUS

Los Angeles natives Dugan Cruz and Sam Sobo originally met in their late teens on what they call “an online dating site for musicians”. After forming Madus in 2013, Cruz and Sobo went through several lineup changes before deciding it best to stay a duo until the right members come along.

Juxtaposing blissful west coast indie against angsty alternative rock, their songs are reminiscent of the early 2000s garage rock revival groups like Franz Ferdinand and The Strokes. In the Spring of 2017 they started a regimen of writing, recording, and releasing one song a month. Since beginning this songwriting regimen they decided to self produce and record all their music out of Cruz’s garage. “After years of accommodating the time constraints and heavy cost of producers, we wanted to be able to focus on the music and not worry about all of that" said Sobo. With the goal being to “...just put music out there and see what sticks”, the duo have kept each release as organic as possible. No expensive PR, no sponsored social media ads, and no chasing of highly coveted “likes”. After releasing a few singles this way, Madus eventually struck a chord with their song “Find Another Girl” achieving over 40,000 cumulative streams. The song has just been made available on Spotify and all other major music platforms with “Play Pretend” as a B-side. Madus is continuing to record frequently and further hone in on their sound.

More shows and music releases currently brewing.

If you you could have picked just one concert to hit up last weekend, you should have your way down to the Tankcrimes Takeover at the Oakland Metro on Saturday night.  For those that don't know, Tankcrimes is a locally based record label out of Oakland and probably better known for their infamous band, Ghoul.  This particular show pulled together a wide array of talent from the Bay Area and beyond and ended up being a ridiculously fun show from start to finish.

When I arrived at the Oakland Metro, the line to gain entry to the show was super long (which was a true testament to the bands playing that evening).  Unfortunately for me, it took a while for that line to move and I only was able to catch the last song from Los Huaycos. Those I chatted with noted they started out the set pretty heavily and really got the crowd engaged for what was to come later on in the night. Next up on the main stage was the heavy hitting Oakland natives, Connoisseur. With the introduction of their newest bass player, Kunjan Joshi, they literally killed every song. The lead singer, Carlos, brought an exciting energy to the stage and connected well with the audience. Every song was banger after banger, and I think they did a great job keeping everyone dialed in on their performance.

Following Connoisseur was the most unexpected performance I think I had ever seen, DeathgraVe. What seemed like it was going to be a normal set turned into a really interesting one. The band had just brought on their new drummer, Clint Baechle, and it was his first performance with them. Andre Cornejo, the lead vocalist, actually goes into character when he performs, and it is very entertaining to watch. It is like he becomes a zombie and sings their songs. It was unlike anything I have ever seen and honestly, was well worth the experience. They did a great job carrying the set and their music was rock solid.

After DeathgraVe came Mortuous,  and let me tell you, they shut it down. The dynamic death metal group got the crowd going in circles. Every song was building on each other and there was no down time between songs. Mortuous kept it heavy hitting the whole time and gave the near-capacity crowd a rock-solid performance. As Mortuous was ending on the main stage, Kicker took over the side stage. Taking the crowd by storm, also Oakland natives packed the side stage room. You could tell their lead vocalist, Roadie, was there to have a good time. Running around on stage, drinking a beer, and yelling lyrics at the crowd was just the start of the performance. Each song was spectacular in delivery and definitely made for a good time to shoot.

Brainoil was up next and this Oakland trio brought the heat to main stage. Their vocalist/guitarist Nate had some of the best screams I heard all night, and was really impressed with their overall performance and the flow of each song throughout the set. Brainoil really set the tone for Necrot, and they came out with a fury and took the crazed crowd to a whole new level. At this point in the show, there were so many people in the venue that bodies were solid from the main stage all the way to the back wall, with multiple mosh pits going on simultaneously.  Needless to say, Necrot had a great set.

Last but not least, Ghoul made their grand entrance onto the Oakland Metro stage appearance and let fans know from the git go what they were in for on Saturday night.   The bag-headed thrash metal band from San Francisco was not your typical metal performance. I had never heard of Ghoul before the show and all I knew was that they had a tendency to get wild and messy. They started their set out with some very heavy riffs and transitioned into a voice-over and followed by people in costumes taking the stage. I was trying to follow the story line,  but all I gathered was something about Nazis, a lady with blonde hair, and a giant robot (none of which seemed to go together). Each character had a piece of it that came off when it got hit by another character.  Luckily, I saved my camera as the dismembered characters showered the pit with what appeared to be fake blood (and other bodily substances).  It think it was a really interesting way to develop a set, and was very impressed with all of the people on stage acting out the hilarity that was unfolding. I was surprised that the crowd has so much energy towards the end of the show (because of all the high-energy bands prior to Ghoul), but I think it ended on a fantastic note with a brilliant performance from San Francisco's very own.

Overall, the Tankcrimes Takeover show was well worth the price of admission (and then some).  Sure, it was a long show, but not long enough where one would lose interest along the way.  Energy levels rose with each passing set, and made for an amazing concert experience when all the dust finally settled.  Tankcrimes did a wonderful job putting together this show, and hats off to Scotty Heath for giving fans one heck of a concert.   Heck, maybe he'll take the Tankcrimes Takeover on the road in the near future.  I'd be down to see a lineup like this again and am sure many across the US would drop some dollars to see a killer show like this.

As always, rock on my friends!

The Dose start off the year with the brand new single "Tart. The single is a followup to the 2018 releases "Vervain", "Saline", and "Drown". This song has a classic grudge vibe, but with a modern spin as well giving it a classic and original sound.

The Dose are a band with heavy guitar playing and even heavier drumming. This duo is an absolute unit when they play together, and this video shows it. High class songwriting and epic musicianship makes these guys great performers.

The Dose is comprised of Indio Downey on vocals/guitar and Ralph Alexander on drums. Over the course of the past year, they’ve been covered by Consequence of Sound, Billboard, Guitar World, Loudwire and more. The Dose have put out their first EP in 2016 and right now, they’re putting the finishing touches on their full-length debut, which was produced by Keith Nelson (Buckcherry) and mixed by Joe Barresi (Queens of the Stone Age, Tool). The band just toured the U.S. with Good Charlotte  and shared the stage with the likes of Deftones, System of A Down and more on the Aftershock and Louder Than Life Festivals. Next up they’re going to Europe with Good Charlotte. The group is managed by Joel and Benji Madden’s company, MDDN.

Steel Panther took over the Fillmore Auditorium on Saturday night and blew the doors off the joint with a performance that was crude, rude, and a little bit nude!  To say the least, it was a one doozy of a glam rock show. At it's very best,  sheer metal mayhem highlighted by four incredible musicians that took it upon themselves to put 'XXX back in Sex!'.  Let the debauchery begin!

Denver’s own Love Stallion kicked off the evening with an incredible set that featured high pitched vocals, a super-talented drummer, an incredible bass guitarist, and a lead guitarist that is second to none. Aaron heated things up for Steel Panther with his incredible voice, one in which his range lends itself perfectly to Love Stallion's 80’s glam rock style of music. I’m not super familiar with their catalog, but it’s safe to say after a performance like this, they are the real deal.  With glam on the upswing again, the future is bright for Love Stallion.  This glitzy glam rock and roll show proved that in a big way!

Onward to the main erection, Steel Panther.  Lord have mercy on these fuckin’ nympho maniacs souls!  I truly love this band, and they failed to disappoint the sold-out crowd on Saturday night. Steel Panther went balls deep right out of the gate with their smash hit, “Eyes of a Panther”. Man, this one sounded as clean as it did on the album on set the stage for one incredible night of rock and roll.  Sure, there was talk about blowing huge loads on the tits and faces of audience members, but one comes to expect that type of depravity at a Steel Panther show.

One thing I can say for certain after watching this show, do not mistake this band as a side show comedy act. These guys are first rate musicians first and foremost and they put it all on display for the masses on Saturday night.  Frontman extraordinaire Michael Starr slayed a cover of Ozzy Osbourne’s classic, “Crazy Train”.   His rendition was spot on as Starr transformed into a creepy replica of the 70-year-old Prince of Darkness right before or eyes. Lexxi Foxx was a trip, and I wasn’t exactly sure if this guy was a dude or a tall skinny chic slapping that bass.  Drummer Stix Zadinia had a solid set behind the skins, and definitely knows his way around the drums.  And my absolute favorite Panther on Saturday was none-other than the maestro himself,  Satchel. I was not expecting to witness such an amazing guitar player after hearing his goofy perverted banter (in the beginning of the show), but boy was I wrong. This guy is an axe slayer!

Bottom line, Saturday night’s Steel Panther show at the Fillmore was definitely one for the ages. Starr, Satchel, Foxx, and Zadinia rocked Denver’s world in a way that had both men and women in attendance yearning for more. Their show ended up being one amazing party that won’t soon be forgotten, and one that was desperately needed in a world that has seriously gone bat-shit crazy.  I’m now a ‘Fanther’ for life!
