9/22/2014 Last week marked the 300th time Hot Tub Johnnie and the Hunnypot Live Radio Show took to the interwebs! It was a jam packed night of music and celebration as we welcomed back our very first musical guest for an encore performance/interview and looked back on many of the great moments that has made the show what it is today.
Leading off as always was Hunnypot Radio Host, HOT TUB JOHNNIE who put together a party down set, which featured some of his top Hunnypot musical guests and artists. Including, LOUIS PRIMA JR., THE DOLLYROTS, MANSIONS ON THE MOON, DAS TAPES, HENRI, BOYFRIEND, YAEL MEYER, POLARIS ROSE and many more!
Our special guest was none other than our very first musical guest, LA's own, MICKEY AVALON. That's right, Mickey was the first guest on our first radio show which aired on November 14th, 2005 - nearly nine years ago!! Hot Tub Johnnie sat down for a special interview and listening session with Mickey where they discussed his start in the industry, touring the world, writing music and all the off the wall shows over the past nine years. Hot Tub even rocked through some classic Mickey Avalon tracks like "My Dick", "Jane Fonda" and "Hollywood". After the interview, Mickey performed a brief, but dynamite set where he stormed through his other classic hits "Mr. Right" and "Stroke". You can see the entire Mickey Avalon interview HERE !!
The rest of the nights celebration was executed perfectly by smokin' performances from LA based funk/pop/soul artist, ADDISON SCOTT and the funky, disco, dance songstress, KIKI KYTE. Not letting up on that dance throttle was HOT TUB JOHNNIE who dropped an encore DJ set loaded with plenty of disco, dance, boogie jams that kept the party rockin' all night.

The 299th Hunnypot Radio Show was a jam packed night of music as we welcomed all the Sync Summit Conference goers for an exciting night of up-and-coming music acts that took over The Mint!
Hunnypot Radio Host, HOT TUB JOHNNIE dropped another hard hitting set with new tunes from PANAMA, JAJA KISSES, WIZ KHALIFA, CURTIS WILLIAMS x JUICY J, BASEMENT JAXX and many more.
Our special industry guest DJ was none other than Go Music's right hand lady, ALYSON VIDOLI. Making her second appearance on the show Aly prepared a smoking set of her favorite tunes at the moment. A playlist which featured tunes by THE BEATLES, ALT-J, EX COPS, TOM VEK, JESSIE WARE and many more.
As we noted above this past radio show was in association with the Sync Summit, so it was loaded with some of today's top trend-setting artists who put on one helluva show. last week's performances spanned across The Mint's Main Room as well as the newly redesigned Mid-City Music Lounge located in the back of The Mint. Last week's performers included Grammy winning music supervisor, GARY CALAMAR who joined Hunnypot for his very first live show. Gary performed a brilliant set of tunes off his forthcoming debut album "You Are What You Listen To" due to drop on 10/14 through Atlantic Records. Kicking things off at The Mid-City Music Lounge was Barbados based rock quartet, THE LONGEST NIGHT who brought out a loud and blistering set of pop, rock tunes. DEBBIE REIFER, took to the Mid-City stage next followed by CARUSO. Rounding out the night at the Mid-City stage was UK based DJ/Production duo, SMOOVE AND TURRELL and kicked out a banging set of upbeat soul jerkin' tunes. Back over at the Main Stage, NY based retro-soul artist, MAYAENI took over with a rockin' set. Melbourne based folk, blues-rock singer-songwriter, HAMISH ANDERSON dropped a killer set of Hendrix inspired guitar hooks. Closing out the night was our headlining act, Grammy award winners, DIRTY VEGAS. This electronic duo of Steve Smith and Paul Harris opened with a stripped down performance of their smash hit from 2001, "Days Go By". The boys were in town to promote their forthcoming album, "Let The Night" due out later this year and released through Rostrum Records. This is the groups first-ever self-released album. In 2006, Gary Calamar founded GO Music with colleague Alyson Vidoli to manage various music supervision projects. Her credits over the years as a supervisor and coordinator include True Blood, House, Big Tips Texas, Weeds, Wilfred, and Dexter. GO Music also hosts a very popular concert series, The Mimosa Music Series which showcases great artists on Sunday mornings.
Gary started his career in the music industry working at a record store in Los Angeles in the 80’s. Years later he got involved with KCRW as a volunteer, and eventually he began hosting his own show with the station (currently airing Sunday nights from 6-8pm). In ’98 Gary broke into Music Supervision, a career which has quickly grown since. Credits of his company GO Music include the film Varsity Blues along with hit show Tru Blood, Six Feet Under, House, Dexter, Entrouage, and Weeds. His more recent personal musical project is kicking off with an upcoming album release.

Debbie Reifer is a singer-songwriter originally from Barbados. Her sound is often compared to Norah Jones and takes influence from Sade, Amel Larrieux, and Corinne Bailey Rae. Debbie’s writing style reflects a tender articulation of the human condition and offers musical therapy for the soul. Since her professional debut in 2012, she has been on the music fast track with the release of her EP, being nominated for Best New Artist at the 2014 Barbados Music Awards, and being chosen to perform at this year’s Canadian Music Week. Debbie is currently recording her first full length studio album.

Mayaeni is a retro-soul singer-songwriter based in New York, NY. She started out recording demos for other artists and working with a number of producers. She released her first self-titled indie album in 2007, resulting in shows throughout the US as well as, a tour of Japan. Mayaeni has worked with Toby Gad, Boots Ottestad, Sam Bisbee, Martin “Dock McKinney,” and Linda Perry among others in her time as an artist. Her music has been placed Converse and Targets ads as well as ABC’s Detroit 1-8-7.
Caruso is the brainchild of Shane Ó Fearghail. An Irish Singer/Songwriter and multi instrumentalist from Dublin, Shane created Caruso to launch his debut album The Watcher & The Comet. Two albums in, a Publishing deal in Europe for the first album, a Distribution and Licensing deal in North America for the second, 2014 is set to be another big year. Shane’s unique voice and superb songwriting serve to encapsulate and deliver Caruso’s alternative philosophy, incorporating a colorful mixture of Alternative Folk and Indie Rock and roll.
Smoove and Turrell are a Newcastle, UK based duo that have been creating soul music since 2009. Since their debut album release, Antique Soul, their musical lives have grown exponentially with writing, producing, recording, and touring.

In a career that started over 10 years ago, the Grammy winning duo of Steve Smith and Paul Harris are ready for the next step in the evolution of Dirty Vegas. They have spent the first half of 2013 working on new material,and have completed their next official release; an EP titled Let The Night that will be released towards the end of the year. In the US, Let The Night will be the band’s first release self-released independent record, an exciting opportunity that was not a reality when any of their previous albums. Let The Night will be represented for sync-licensing in the US by Pig Factory and will be released on Rostrum in North America and D:Vision Records in the rest of the world.

Last week's Monday night featured one of LA's top rising indie rock acts, BIZZY KIDDO who hit the Hunnypot crowd with a soothing set of chill, yet upbeat, indie-pop rock. Next up was Atlanta, GA based pop rock duo, MAGNETS & GHOSTS whose chilling, pop ballads were quite a delight to all. LA based female singer, DJ, Producer, HENRI dropped an infectious dj set of catchy electronic jams that meshed perfectly with her unique vocal stylings. Closing out the night was LA's own Elyse Haren and her band, ELYSE & THE AFTERMATH who stole the show with their electro infused, acoustic pop songs that feature both retro and modern elements.

Music supervisor/tastemaker Sanaz Lavaedian returns for another Hunnypot Guest DJ Set! Based in LA, Sanaz started out as a music coordinator for Robin Kaye’s SynchroniCity in 2009, then joined Reel Music in 2010. Now at mOcean, she has several credits under her belt including ABC’s Brothers & Sisters, FOX’s The Good Buys, USA’s Burn Notice, and the critically acclaimed 2011 film Beginners. In 2010, Sanaz joined forces with Patrick Belton to create Off The Record, their own music supervision company.

Bizzy Kiddo is a local Los Angeles band that formed in 2011. The growth in their indie rock sound has sparked the beginning of their touring career, including a sweet gig lined up at The Echo this September after joining us here at Hunnypot. The new buzz band Magnets and Ghosts is a duo that hails from Atlanta, Georgia. The two collaborators, Dean Roland and Ryan Potesta, met in 2007 through various high profile projects they were both involved in and in November 2011, they released a full length album of their own work. Joe Berman began his music career shortly after finishing high school by songwriting and playing guitar in numerous Hollywood rock and roll bands. Years later, in 2010 he co-founded MediaHorse, a progressive music marketing firm with deep relationships in the film, TV, advertising, gaming, and new media industries. Sad Robot is a three-piece band that has brought the sweet sounds of indie-pop-rock music to Los Angeles and beyond since 2011. Following the release of their debut album, their tunes have been placed in the hit TV shows Bones and Bad Girls Club, as well the 2013 Winter X Games (among others). Sad Robot’s motto “fight or die trying” is apparent in their music with songs of struggle, hope, and the constant race we are all in.
Young Beautiful in a Hurry formed in Los Angeles in 2011. Frontman Brendan McCreary and bandmates Bryan Taylor, Chris Norton, and Pete Griffin create a highly acclaimed sound of classic rock influenced by Queen, Bowie, and Elvis. Their newest record, the Royalty EP, was released this March.

Rachel joined The Asylum in 2012 as an editor in the post-production department. She edited several films for the Syfy Channel, including Sharknado. In 2013, she moved to the marketing department, where she currently works as the Marketing Materials Coordinator.
Rachel has cultivated long-standing relationships with a number of bands in LA’s independent music scene. She quickly saw the opportunity to place independent local music in The Asylum’s films. Under the guidance of the head composer, she created and stepped into the position of Music Supervisor. Rachel has placed songs in Animal Planet’s Blood Lake: Attack of the Killer Lampreys, Airplane Vs. Volcano, The Coed and the Zombie Stoner, and Syfy’s upcoming Sharknado 2: The Second One.

Michael Santillo, David Muntner, and Adam Putzer have evolved in their years as the rock-and-roll rooted New York three-piece we know as The Tins. The Tins have a fine tour history that even includes sets at SXSW and NXNE festivals. Their newest EP Young Blame is set for a July 29 release.

Mike Turner is an LA based music supervisor, editor and music producer for film, television, advertising and trailers. Mike also currently serves as Creative Director at IP asset management firm CH Music Investments LLC. As a music supervisor, Mike found his niche in Los Angeles and lately works on most projects independently. Currently Mike oversees all production of music for The World Poker Tour on Fox Sports and “Wheels & Reels” on The World Fishing Network.
Listed in Music Connection Magazine as “one of the best unsigned bands to see live” three years in a row (2011-2013), The Big Bang are an up and coming soul shakin’, groove makin, alt soul band from Los Angeles CA. With a sound combination of Amy Winehouse + Sam and Dave + Fitz and the Tantrums, The Big Bang has hit the scene with their unique and alternative take on southern California soul.
Finishing their last year of education at the Musicians Institute in Hollywood, the band became friends and began developing their diverse image and unique sound. They can now be heard on numerous local and internet radio stations (including Kiss FM in NYC and Utica), in the air on Delta Airlines, and on TV (VH1′s Mob Wives, Single Ladies, Love and Hip Hop, MTV’s Jersey Shore, Teen Wolf, and Snooki and Jwoww, TNT’s Boston’s Finest, Lifetimes Dance Moms, the CW morning news, and many more).

THE ECHO AND THE SOUND is a two piece, guitar and drums band, based in Los Angeles, CA. formed in late 2012; BRIAN RICH (guitar/vocals) and DOUGLAS JEWELL (drums) made it very clear early on… “YOU CAN’T KILL US UNLESS WE QUIT.” With punk rock overtones, blues-folk undertones, country-esque and gothic cantina styled, their sound has been described “as if Bob Dylan and Sam Shepard got into a fist fight while drinking in a desert cantina.”

Now in Venice Beach, Joslin has truly narrowed in on his “California Soul” sound. On any given day you can find him serenading drifters along the Venice boardwalk and see people of all shapes and sizes dancing along to his mellow rhythm. Playing songs from his latest release, Come Out West, a blend of Stevie Wonder’s Motown groove, dripping with Brian Wilson-esque harmonic arrangements, he has encapsulated the feel good, California sunshine music he always dreamed of making. To top it all off, Joslin produced, wrote, mixed and mastered the entire album. He even designed the album artwork.
Somehow in the midst of all this he still finds time for one more dream. “I always wanted to be a Beach Boy: live by the beach on the west coast, play music, create art and surf…I’m doing all that and more now. Anything from here is just icing on the cake.” From one dream to the next, Joslin’s art explores the idea of life as an adventure, love, and the pursuit of meaningful relationships in hopes that it’ll inspire you to experience life the same way.
The 294th Hunnypot Radio Show lived up to it's well known tradition. The Goodnight remains active in the Los Angeles music scene and on the road, touring regionally and showcasing at festivals such as South By South West in Texas, as well as having music featured on major television networks E!, MTV, TLC, and VH1. The High Plane Drifters were a powerful musical force that never really fitted into any neat sound bites or perfectly tailored descriptions, but when reviewers did put their thoughts into words, this is how they described the band.......
‘...like having all your birthdays arrive at once, well that’s if you like your tunes packed with what sounds like a bastardised concoction of raw as you like early Jesus and Mary Chain going head to head the more gritty garage psych-blues ensembles.
The High Plane Drifters ransack the whole primitive blues culture, dirty, gritty and without doubt potent, it’s the kind of swamp fest that would have Tarrantino shitting bricks with its lineage transgressing directly to Gallon Drunk and further beyond to the likes of Link Wray and Muddy Waters...a wired up rabble rousing hot road action found hauled up in a lay by sniffin’ the blue glue.
Imagine Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and Co dropped dead centre of the 60’s beat/garage scene – yeah, that f**king good....tripping into the world of classic Spacemen 3, repetitive looping chords and that primal mind-melting core.
It has at times that out of it feel, as though Jim Morrison was doing extra curricular work fronting a secret underground student psych band, listen a little closer and the detachment of early Warsaw/Joy Division begins to eke into view.’
The fact is that they sound like they arrived in their Teesside home via Detroits 8 mile road and the Bowery district of New York, stopping somewhere on the banks of Lake Erie to bash out their sound.
A rollicking onslaught of the rawest rock you might ever hear two men play, setting the tone with some hard hitting blues thunder, with contrasting psychedelic tunes that ride the mysterious crest of Psych-rock like old hands.....
The band had also a formidable live reputation, one live reviewer was moved to write – “Imagine a two-piece rock’n’blues band contest in which the competition are all thrashed into second place by a howling Neathandral and a drummer with genuine versatility. This pair, however, sound like a three, even four piece at times, and they achieve this more subtly than by just blasting the room with wall to wall racket.
Wesley John Stephenson’s fulsome and varied percussive palette is crucial to this illusion – as is frontman Timothy James Oxnard’s use of his guitar alternatively as a rhythm engine, lead instrument, surrogate bass and even as a kind of modernist Cello when he grinds a bow futuristically across six strings, propelled by Krautrock express-train drums”
Away from the stage they allowed their full creativity to flow, creating some interesting and genuinely thrilling recordings that spanned two EP’s and a sole LP that was recorded at the height of their career. Vinyl copies of these records are now becoming increasingly sought after as the bands reputation continues to build, regardless of the fact they called it a day over a decade ago.
To showcase the great music that they recorded, the band have put together a ‘Best of’ compilation, with tracks available for download and streaming, made up of official releases, out-takes and demo tracks that span their career from 2003 – 2009, and much of the material still sounds as fresh as the day it was recorded.
Henri (aka Henrietta Tiefenthaler) is making her mark on both sides of the Atlantic as a DJ, singer/producer/songwriter and fashionista. Henri is a rapidly emerging name on the Los Angeles scene, spinning at some of L.A.’s hottest parties. As a performer, Henri is demonstrating an equal versatility, performing with her psychedelic krautrock band Thrillionaire, and developing her own dance/pop productions. She has a forthcoming EP in the works and this week she released this awesome hoolah hoop addiction/battle video to accompany her first solo single, “It’s Like This, It's Like That” on her label Monstertooth Records.
