I had the pleasure of sitting down with Justin Kim, Chapman University Graduate, filmmaker, and the face behind Suave Punk, an up and coming alternative solo project. What immediately struck me was Justin’s dedication to music (he even came to our interview,  book in hand,  entitled “Our Band Could be Your Life”, which tells the story of bands like Minor Threat and the alternative movement, a large influence on the Suave Punk sound). Justin has always been a musician, playing the piano as a child and becoming self taught on guitar at 12 years old. However, it wasn't until Kim found electric guitar in college that he found a closer bond with music stating it was the “First instrument to feel like an extension of myself, [it created], Not just a sound, but a feeling”. It was in the freshman dorms of Chapman University in Orange, California that Justin began his solo career under the name Suave Punk, it was also during this year (late 2020, early 2021), that a Suave Punk single was put onto the Spotify playlist Fresh Finds. Through Spotify’s influence, Pack Records reached out to Kim, signing him, joining the label who assists the likes of Blood Cultures, aldn, and CARR. The single in question being a personal favorite of the Suave Punk discography - “Dreams of Losing Teeth”.

I got to ask Justin about how he came to write such a beautifully dark and euphoric song. The inspiration comes from a real nightmare Kim had in late 2020 that he says “seared into my memory”, not just visually but sensory “the feeling of the roots snapping is what stood out”. Which created a visual for Kim to base his first Suave Punk release, he says he often uses similar devices for writing saying, “I like to focus on images and vignettes rather than describing parts of my life”. It was after the release of “Dreams of Losing Teeth” that Suave Punk began to grow a following. Kim explained how many people began to reach out, sharing their similar dreams of vivid gore similar to Justin. From there, along with lead man of The Incredible Purple Toad and owner of the then unknown, local venue, Steve Wehner decided to put on a show. Using out-of-pocket money, the two musicians put on a show at a Warehouse, playing for the very first time to a live audience. Thus was born a new idea that the two are still growing to this day. The Warehouse OC is the “it” place to be at Chapman University. Along with help from local bands and Justin Kim, Wehner has some expansive ideas in the works for the venue.

Suave Punk has snowballed since Kim’s freshman year of college. He has just recently played his first out-of-state venue in New York, and has his first full length album in the works. Justin is an extremely talented and incredibly humble artist. His philosophy with producing music is, in his words “do it for the homies”, always making his music not for himself or his fans, but for those he cares about most.

Hunnypot Live is malleable. Without performers and guests we (Hot Tub Johnnie, Jeff Gray, Ryan Taalbi, Justin "Juice" Born) pulled off a classic Hunnypot Live show reminiscent of the early days of Hunnypot (Radio). Jason Cienkus came through to discuss his music supervision career, exciting new happenings and absolutely amazing playlists. Future Hunnypot Live guest, Sean The Star Emperor, also stopped by to chat and life and music. We can't wait to see you all again very soon. 3/16/2020

JASON CIENKUS (MUSIC SUPERVISOR)

Jason started his career at the forefront of music supervision in the 90’s that led to an illustrious run at Warner Bros. Records. He was part of the duo that started the very first soundtrack department at that label, which was responsible for the production of movie soundtracks tallying over $30 million in worldwide sales. His passion for film and the marketing of the music from it, guided him to a position at New Line Cinema where he spearheaded soundtrack strategy, marketing and synergies across the company.

Sensing a dramatic shift in the music business, Jason pivoted to digital and found himself at the center of the halcyon days of YouTube creators and digital influencers. His position at the boutique start up DanceOn gave him an opportunity to break ground in the music licensing area for YouTube content. In addition, he created a digital marketing platform for the company where social media and video influencers could use music effectively to market and promote artists & songs in a natural and organic way. This tactic has now become a key part of digital marketing plans for record labels, artist managers & musicians.

Jason is currently working on a dance competition show as the music supervisor & music clearance lead titled ‘Floored’, which is being produced for the new streaming platform Quibi that will launch in April 2020.

Aston Fenly is a Danish-born songwriter who just moved to LA.  His debut single, "Sunrise," just dropped via Universal's Denmark imprint and after taking it for a spin a few times,  I'm here to tell you this one is absolute fire.  It's not your typical mass-produced track, but one that reaches into your heart and take's hold of it quickly, touching on haunting subjects that most have experienced at one point or another in their life.  I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Aston one-on-one and dove head first into topics that challenged my mind and touched my soul.  We discussed his early years as an artist, his move to Los Angeles from Denmark, and his latest single, "Sunrise".   No topics were out of bounds, and we went the distance in an interview you won't want to miss!

Matthew:  Tell our listeners how you got started in music?

Aston:  I had a really hard time in middle school and was bullied a lot. Every single day would just be me coming home and crying and feeling very unpopular ( I am sure a lot of kids can relate to this).  At one point I just thought to myself, “What do I have to do to like change how people look at me?”  I really wanted to do something about it and when I did, everything suddenly changed.  I switched schools, started into music, and somehow became the most popular kid in school.

Matthew:  What was it like performing on stage for the very first time?

Aston:   I think it was fun. I remember the first show that we had.  We were like 14 at that time, and I was in a rap group with some friends from my school.  We played this club, which I believe was for young people.  Funny enough, they actually served alcohol and people were drunk at that party. It was just like a lot of people from our school, maybe 150 people.

Matthew:  Is it different now that the spotlight is now on you?

Aston:  I don’t know. I've always felt like I've always been the central part of every project I've done.  When I decided to do my own thing, there seemed to be a lot more pressure on me because there was no one I could fall back on.  On the flip side, it allowed me to do what I wanted on my terms which ultimately allowed for much more creativity and freedom moving forward.

Matthew:  Who were some of your early influences that helped shape the singer/songwriter you are today?

Aston:  I really started getting into music during my early teenage years. As I mentioned earlier, I was having a really bad time in school. I really connected to the emo rock vibe at that time and one of my biggest aspirations was My Chemical Romance.  I’m also a huge fan of Blink-182’s work.  But in the end, music is so personal to us, right?  It's such a subjective thing.  And if you encounter  a specific piece of music or a specific band during a specific time in your life, maybe you’ll be more connected to the band in some unique way because their music helped you through a difficult period in your life.

Matthew:  What was it was like relocating from Copenhagen to Los Angeles?

Aston:  The transition was cool. I like the sun here and it helps me from being depressed during the winter.  When I went home in December, it was just like one gray fog for a whole with maybe a day of two of sun with snow. There are a number of things I miss about Denmark (and some I even took for granted), but overall, it was great and I really like it here.

Matthew:  You just released “Sunrise” in February.  Can you tell us what this song is all about?

Aston:  As a musician there is lots of downtime, downtime where nothing's happening and we're all just kind of waiting. It could be you produced an album, or you're signed to a label, and now you’re waiting to put out a video.  During those times, it can get really hard for your mind to live with the fact that you are not accomplishing something which ultimately makes you feel depressed or anxious.  “Sunrise” is about that mental struggle and how one deals with all of those feelings and emotions – survival skills if you will.  And we all have these emotions, right?  It also tackles suicide which is a topic we should all take seriously.

Matthew:  I hear you your music can be heard in a few Netflix series.  What series can our listeners drop in on?

Aston:  My track “Blood Moon” is actually in the Netflix original called Jinn. They really liked the song and it's not even out yet – so cool.  I also have some of my music sprinkled throughout their global hit series, The Rain.

A few rapid-fire questions from our Hunnypot Listeners:

Matthew:  Who is your favorite rapper?

Aston:  Drake

Matthew:  Outside of rap, who is one of your favorite artists out there right now which you’d like to collaborate?

Aston:  My Chemical Romance

Matthew:  Are there any charitable causes or movements that are important to you?

Aston:  Suicide Prevention, Bullying and Anti-Discrimination of all types

Matthew: What are some of your favorite places to eat here in LA?

Aston: Carousel Restaurant in Hollywood

Matthew:   What book might we catch you reading during down time?

Aston: “Black Vinyl, White Powder” by Simon Napier-Bell

Matthew:  Which TV show or movie are you hooked on?

Aston:  A Danish Comedy film called “The Green Butchers”

Matthew:  If you were trapped on a desert island and could only have (1) album to listen to, what would it be?

Aston:  The Black Parade by My Chemical Romance

ZANA MESSIA & THE MIDNIGHT MISSION

Artist and songwriter Zana Messia - originally from the Balkans, grew up in Sweden where she escaped as a war refugee. Her music has been recorded in 6 languages, featured in film and TV, released by artists from the US, New Zealand, China, Sweden and Eastern Europe. She has been shortlisted for an Academy Award for best original song and was the featured artist in the FIFA Cup “Samba of The World” campaign.

Zana’s most recent musical undertaking is the creation of her alter-ego punk/rock/soul band The Midnight Mission, which reinterprets Zana’s songs in a raw, edgy fashion, aiming to challenge outdated labels such as genre and radio formats. Her upcoming album “11:11” is essentially an experiment. Each song is produced in two significantly different ways. The album is produced by the Grammy nominated producer/bass player Billy Mohler.

“Zana Messia refers to The Midnight Mission as her altered ego, because the project allows her to detour from writing contemporary pop songs to penning music from edgier genres like punk rock, alternative and soul. One of the band’s most eclectic compositions is a love song entitled Enuff.”

Zana Messia just released the music video for her single “L.A. Minute”, an ode to Los Angeles as the city where reality can change on a dime. This is the second single from Zana’s new double album entitled 11:11.

BILLY HAMMER

Los Angeles-based multi-instrumentalist, Billy Hammer, is set to release his latest single “Glow” on December 6th, 2019. A former remixer, he got his start as “GARLYN,” with his top two tracks amassing nearly 1M streams on SoundCloud and counting. With his Soundcloud days behind him, Billy Hammer’s recent work is characterized by its seamless blend of desert-psychedelia and electropop, and he writes, producers and records all of his music single handedly.

His upcoming track, “Glow,” is a story told through vignettes, each verse about chasing adventure and life-changing experiences. A common thread across the vignettes, Hammer speaks to the power of music as a force of change and revelation.

While I call L.A. home these days, Detroit will always have my heart. I was born and raised there, but after watching Entourage and visiting the west, I knew I had to move there to see what the hype was all about. But before all of that, I was just a young boy in Detroit. Hip-hop was always there for me, but it wasn’t until I listened to The Slim Shady LP on a family road trip that I knew it was deeper than just being a fan. It was my calling. I had to make somebody feel the same way Em was making me feel. It was MANDATORY.

Apparently the "Shadow" doesn't know. Hunnypot Live had an less confusing and more rocking night than an Iowa Caucus. Hot Tub Johnnie unanimously was elected to start the party music. The Mayor of the Sunset Strip, Rodney Bingenheimer, joined us in a campaign to tell us about his illustrious entertainment career and cool people stories (spoiler, everybody famous knows Rodney). Caroline probably can't vote but she sings pop songs perfect for budding adult citizens. Garrett Holbrook hit with high polling hard rock music. Batfarm canvased with nocturnal rock notes from the stage. Flipp dropped in for a state of their union before they had to catch a plane and let a little brother on stage for backup and Hot Tub turned in a closing dance set for the ages. RODNEY BINGENHEIMER (Rodney on the Rock/SiriusXM INTERVIEW/DJ SET)

If you don’t know who Rodney Bingenheimer is then you’ve been missing out on some of the most memorable moments in music history. Mr. Rodney Bingenheimer has been one of the most influential and legendary DJs in Southern California. He created a name for himself when he unintentionally helped pioneer some of the most successful and iconic bands, and it all started back in 1976 when he joined the KROQ. Back in his days with KROQ, Rodney would host “Rodney on the Roq.”, Where he would play "new artists", creating a wave on new trending bands such as Blondie, The Ramones, the Sex Pistols, Joan Jett, No Doubt, Nirvana and Coldplay, to name a few.

Since the start of his career, he has been dubbed as "the prince of pop" and has held that title for over 20 years. He was even the subject of a documentary, titled “The Mayor of the Sunset Strip”. His colleague, Jed the Fish quoted Rodney as “Key to the history of Orange County Music” It is an honor to have Mr. Bingenheimer with us, and we will forever treasure this moment in Hunnypot history. He immersed himself in music; learning and excelling on a variety of instruments, including becoming an accomplished Lap Steel Guitarist. He moved to California to study Rock Vocals and Guitar at the Musician’s Institute in Hollywood. Holbrook’s vocal styles cover the musical spectrum from Metal to Americana Edge, but his first love is Rock .Following his intensive music studies at MI, he was introduced to Music Producer/Bassist, Fabrizio Grossi (Dave Navarro, Alice Cooper, Supersonic Blues Machine, Steve Vai). Garrett’s power vocals and nationwide performances with DTN have placed him on the radar of local music producers, collaborating recording artists, Film/TV music supervisors, commercial jingle producers, and professional session musicians.

Holbrook’s performance style is reminiscent of Classic Rock and Nu Metal vocalists such as Steven Tyler and Jonathan Davis; creating a present-day rock sound that attracts fans from all musical genres. Garrett is currently rehearsing his new solo band, and writing/recording a new album.

BATFARM

BATFARM

Alexx Calise and Dennis Morehouse were exposed to music from a very young age. They’ve been feeling the effects ever since.

Comprised of Calise, an introspective lyricist and “harmony machine”, and Morehouse, a masterful arranger and sound manipulator, Batfarm is a two-piece alternative rock band whose sound can be best described as “darkedelic”. The multi-instrumentalists keep it small not only for efficiency’s sake, but also to keep creating the music they want without added personalities.

Though the two were from complete opposite ends of the country, they met in LA through a mutual friend. Realizing immediately that there was chemistry between them, the two began seeing each other. They initially tried to keep their romantic relationship separate, but collaborating on music was inevitable.

A few years into dating, Dennis was asked to write some music for an indie movie. He approached Alexx to help with the song, and they immediately found that they had amazing musical chemistry as well. Shortly after, they started working on music for licensing together. What they found was that they weren’t just developing songs; they were developing a sound that could really be something.

However, a myriad of things began to happen over the course of the next few years, which forced the project to be put on an indefinite hold. Alexx’s song “Cry” took off thanks to a placement in a major TV show, forcing her to really concentrate on her solo career, and her brother also passed away suddenly. Dennis started touring heavily and pursuing other musical ventures in the interim as well. The pair inevitably started to grow apart, and decided to end their romantic relationship.

The story does not have a tragic ending however, as the pair decided to reconnect and record some covers just for fun about a year later, after the emotional dust had settled. Realizing that there was something still there musically, they decided to finally take those songs they wrote all those years ago, and perform them live…And so, Batfarm began.

Ultimately, Calise and Morehouse thought they were just chapters in each other’s books, but they actually found that they were still part of each other’s stories. They were merely playing the wrong characters. Music has always been the constant and the bond for this powerful duo, and you can see their love for each other and their undeniable chemistry on stage and in person. The two even share joint custody of their cat, Mittens, who is often the subject of their promotional posters and videos.

Currently, Batfarm is recording their first EP with longtime friend, Charlie Waymire, who actually gets the band’s quirky humor, genre defying sound, perfectionism, and demand for greatness.

Combining Alexx’s grunge and blues influences with rich, choral soundscapes and Dennis’s love of industrial, funk, and psychedelic music, Batfarm creates a sound that is like everything and nothing at once.

While the music itself is serious, they don’t take themselves too seriously, and it is their hope that the darkness of some of their own personal experiences will help others to find their own light.

We're only a few awards seasons away from a Flat Earth believer refusing a Golden Globe award. That has nothing to do with the first Hunnypot Live of 2020. We dropped a doozy. Hot Tub kicked off the show with a booty shaking party set. Donna De Lory hit the jacuzzi jets to talk about her career and life highlights. La Machine De Rêve' featured Donna on vocals and a rich musical cast (including Bronson Wisconsin, Greg Ansin and Anthony Resta) to convey spiritual pop. Zeus Rebel Waters raged with positivty and pop hooks. h2the returned with eclectic electro organo rock, Sun In China blew the doors off with high power hard rock. Mike Millie & (DJ) Veggie Tron brought the hook laden rap and Hot Tub Johnnie finished the night with a world famous dance party set.
